Southeastern Illinois College (SIC) sophomore Charles King has been named the Small College Basketball National Player of the Week presented by BSN Sporting Goods for Week 10 by the USCAA. A 2023 graduate of Vienna High School, King is the first recipient of this prestigious award from a two-year institution in 2025, as the honor typically highlights upperclassmen from four-year schools. This year’s other winners include athletes from institutions such as Salem University (NCAA D2), Lyon College (NCAA D3), and Florida National University (NAIA).
King’s recognition follows a standout weekend on the court during a challenging back-to-back road trip to Ohio. He averaged 23.5 points and 7 rebounds per game, showcasing his leadership and skill for the Falcons. In SIC's victory over Miami University-Middletown, King recorded 22 points on 5-of-11 shooting and an impressive 12-of-13 from the free throw line to seal the game. The following day, he delivered another stellar performance with 25 points on 58.8% shooting in a hard-fought match-up with University of Cincinnati-Clermont, in 35 minutes played.
King’s season-long contributions have been equally noteworthy. The 6’6” sophomore swingman is averaging 21.2 points per game on 52.8% shooting, including 47.6% from three-point range, while leading the team with 7.6 rebounds per game. His efforts have propelled the Falcons to an impressive 17-5 record with eight games still to play this season. Other notable games for King this season have included 36 points against Dyersburg State Community College, 27 points against Arkansas State University-Newport, 26 points against Harry S. Truman Community College, 22 points against Harper College, and 19 points against Kaskaskia College.
In addition to his athletic success, King excels academically with a perfect 4.00 GPA through 78 completed credit hours and is set to graduate in May. He serves as the Student Trustee on the Southeastern Illinois College Board for the 20224-2025 academic year and works part-time in the SIC Bookstore.
“We couldn’t be prouder of Charlie and everything he’s accomplished,” said SIC Head Coach Sam Swinford. “Awards like this aren’t won on accident and is a true testament to all of his hard work in his time here. He’s been a phenomenal leader for us this year and has not only made those around him better, but has raised the standard within our program of what it means to be a Falcon.”
King’s stellar play has drawn interest from several four-year institutions, with five scholarship offers already on the table and more inquiries coming in. He was made aware of the award Tuesday morning after practice in the locker room, surrounded by teammates who shared in the excitement of his recognition. Of the honor, King said, "I want to thank my great teammates and coaches for putting me in a position to showcase my ability, and thank you to Southeastern Illinois College for the opportunity to play the game that I love."
