Southeastern Illinois College is proud to announce the signing of Ryan Schmidt, a standout student-athlete from Effingham St. Anthony High School, to compete in both men's basketball and men's golf for the Falcons.
A rare two-sport talent, Schmidt brings an elite athletic pedigree to SIC, with a decorated resume in both basketball and golf during his time as a Bulldog.
On the golf course, Schmidt was a four-year contributor to one of the top high school programs in the state. He was part of three IHSA State Championship teams, establishing himself early with honors such as the 2021 JV Leading Scorer and the 2022 JV Low Handicap. Schmidt also gained national exposure as a member of the team selected to represent both St. Anthony and the state of Illinois at the National Golf Tournament in Texas in 2024, and he will compete again at the prestigious Pinehurst National Invitational in 2025.
On the basketball court, Schmidt has had one of the most decorated careers in the history of the National Trail Conference (NTC). He was a four-year varsity player, earning:
NTC Second Team honors (2022-23)
NTC All-Tournament Team (2022-23, 2024-25)
2023-24 and 2024-25 NTC Tournament MVP
2023-24 and 2024-25 NTC MVP
His performance in the 2023-24 NTC Championship game made history, as he scored 36 points, breaking the previous record held by Leon Gobzinkski for the most points in a title game. That season also saw him earn:
2023-24 St. Anthony Bulldogs MVP
2023-24 IBCA All-State First Team
2023-24 AP All-State Honorable Mention
All-Tournament honors at both the St. Anthony Turkey Tournament and the Effingham/Teutopolis Christmas Classic
He capped off his career by leading the Bulldogs to a 4th place finish at the IHSA Class 1A State Finals and repeated as the school's MVP in 2024-25, also earning IBCA All-State Second Team recognition.
“Ryan is a fierce competitor with a versatile skill set, a tireless work ethic, and a winner’s mentality,” said SIC Head Basketball Coach Sam Swinford. “What he’s accomplished in two sports at a high level is nothing short of incredible, and we’re thrilled to welcome him into our program. He’s going to be a difference-maker on the court, on the course, and in the classroom.”
Schmidt plans to pursue his academic and athletic career at SIC beginning in the Fall of 2025.
